Well, it’s the last weekend before the election, and I plan to make some calls for Obama and do some protesting against Prop 8.  However, I think I’ll take a break from politicking to check out the Creatures of Comfort Warehouse Sale. Up to 90% off–I hope there’s some Rachel Comey for me to snatch up.

Made with Hands: I Think Summer is Almost Over

Summer doesn’t end in California until around Halloween. It’s the same thing every year, and we are forced to endure it while most of the country gets to pack away their sandals and pull out the warm and cozies. This year is no different, but finally this week, we are starting to get some relief. Right on schedule.

So, in honor of the dropping temps, I thought I’d feature Made with Hands, a handmade accessories label started by East London twins Calliste and Carissa in 2004. Their hats, scarves, bow ties, necklaces and housewares are knitted and crocheted from 100% natural fibers. Plus, they’re cute.

Now if only we could get below 80 degrees.

The Filthy Youth: Totally Not Dogstar

So I came pretty late to the Gossip Girl bandwagon, but I’ve been catching up on season 1 on DVD. After watching the first few episodes, I began to ask myself why i didn’t watch sooner since it has a hot cast, everyone sleeps with everyone, they shop a lot and wear designer clothes (90210 eat your heart out).

The cast member you kinda love to hate is Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) and he has a band. I know right now your kinda groaning and Dogstar might be coming to mind but, wait, this band is kinda good. They sound a bit like The Libertines, and they are called The Flithy Youth. You can check out more of their songs on their myspace page.

LA Event: Part Time Punks Festival

One of my favorite clubs in Los Angeles, Part Time Punks, takes place every Sunday at The Echo. It’s where you go every week if you want to dance to No Wave, Post Punk, Indie Pop and other obscure music. The club has become notrious for their Smiths night, and many celebs have cut moves on their dance floor–from Karen O to Chloe Sevigny.

Now the club is putting on the first Post Punk Festival since the early 80’s. The Part Time Punks Festival will take place on Nov 16th at The Echo and The Echoplex. The first 100 tickets will be sold for only $14 via ticketweb and should sell very quickly.

The club has put together a pretty amazing line up, featuring the first performance in 20 years from A Certain Ratio. Also playing is the couldn’t be hotter band of the moment Vivan Girls. The rest of the stellar line up features Pylon, Love is All, Medium Medium, Savage Republic, Warpaint, Mika Miko The Nightingales and many more. Doing special dj sets are David J. (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets), Dave Newton (Mighty Lemon Drops),  Chuck Warner (Messthetics/Hyped 2 Death) and Dan Selzer (Acute Records).

I was checking out the pics of Mexico Fashion Week Spring 09 on Coutorture, and I was really into the collection by Manhes Massun. I couldn’t find out too much about the label, but I do know that it’s a collaboration between Sophie Massun and Isabel Manhes.

Let me know if you know anything else, but in the meantime, check out the duos colorful and distinctly Mexican collection.  I want all this stuff!

Beck has just released the official new video for “Gamma Ray”. This is the first single off of Modern Guilt, his newest album. The video features none other than fashionista Chloe Sevigny, who shimmies all over this bright video and wears her best clownesque make up (girl looks hot).

Good news from Dior: the fashion house is rumored to have chosen the lovely and talented Marion Cotillard as the new face of the Lady Dior handbag.  This means we can look forward to ads with the star of Le Vie en Rose within the year!

Obsession for the Week: The Organ’s “Thieves”

My obsession for the week is the newest release from The Organ titled Thieves. The EP is a final farewell from the band who called it quits in 2006 after releasing the insanely good Grab that Gun album. These songs were being worked on at the time of the break up, and the band got back together briefly to record them.

The Organ was definitely a great band whose time was cut short far to early. Take a listen and pick up the 6 song EP out on Mint Records:

Let the Bells Ring
Dont Be Angry

No, it’s Not The Knife. It’s Fever Ray

It’s been a few years since the last masterpiece by The Knife was released, and it looks like we might have to wait a lil’ longer. The female half of the duo, Karin Dreijer Andersson, is releasing a new album under the moniker Fever Ray.

The album is expected to be released in 2009 and there is an instrumental teaser up on her Myspace page.
