So, I’m thinking I’d like to start in with the feathers next year. Perhaps this Pluma feather hairband would be a good place to begin.

This past week launched the release of Waltz with Bashir, a film festival darling that has been earning rave reviews. Waltz runs the gamut of genres being animated, foreign and a documentary, but don’t let any of those labels scare you away from seeing this film, which deals with the first Lebanon War of the early eighties.

The film centers around Ari, whose recurring nightmares of being chased by 26 dogs lead him into believing that they share a connection with his Israeli Army mission in the war. As he starts to investigate this period of his life, which he has no recollection of, his memory starts to come back. The film is filled with haunting images of horror and beauty. Director Ari Folman has won many critics prizes this year and is also nominated for a Golden Globe.

The time has come–you can now get the Hayden-Harnett collection at Target.  I haven’t seen them in person, but the photos are seductive enough. Super vintage-y.  Plus, they only go as high as $49.99. I like this giant clutch (it comes with strings attached if you want to wear it on your shoulder) pictured above.  It’s pretty classy, as you can see, but not humdrum. It also comes in black.

Here are some other highlights:

The obsession of the week is Los Angeles-based trio Princeton. They released their newest recording The Bloomsbury EP over the summer. Consisting of songs focused on key members of the influential Bloomsbury collective that existed in the early 20th century, it’s been on heavy rotation since I got it.  The album features songs that stick in your head for some time after hearing, and who doesn’t want to hear a song about Virginia Woolf?

Catch them at Spaceland on Dec 27th with Bodies of Water. Here’s a song to sample from them:

Leonard Woolf

Rachel Maddow in Vogue Magazine: Nerdy Chic but Not Contrived

03m-1

I love a good break-out star, and this year my favorite starry success story is Rachel Maddow. During the election, she seriously kept me and a lot of people I know sane, and even after, her witty take on politics and the country’s easy-to-be-freaked-out-by state of affairs keeps me from totally losing it on a day to day basis.  Plus, she’s so freaking cool in a genuinely nerdy way.

To prove it, here she is from her recent Vogue shoot, mixing Jil Sander with classic Converse All Stars.  On anyone else, it would seem so contrived and borrrrr-rrrrring, but if you’ve ever read an interview with Maddow, you know she’s not trying to be ironic or faux geek-chic.  I mean, she spend her weekends in Massachusetts going to her favorite recycling center when she could be whooping it up in NYC, and she stays up at night worrying about the economy after tossing back a few at an old man bar. She’s an honest-to-goodness nerd.

Yet, gay or straight, man or woman, you cannot deny it: Rachel Maddow is heartbreakingly hot. Why didn’t they give her the cover?

The People’s Shoe Makes Us Wish We Were Santogold

I stumbled upon The People’s Shoe blog and discovered these one-of-a-kind kicks. They were made for and given to the one and only Santogold (who I guess now goes by “Santi” due to a lawsuit).  I must say I’m quite jealous–I love gold,  and the dangling charm on the shoe is super cute. I wish these weren’t just one of a kind.

You can go to the site and check out the stuff that’s made for lil’ ole you and me. A thing to note about The People’s Shoe is that they are an environmentally conscious company, so they avoid using poly bags, and their shoes come in reusable tote bags. Plus, in this recessionistic time, they are reasonably priced, and you can feel good about your purchase knowing that each year they donate a portion of their profits to a charitable organization that directly helps the people. This year’s pick is
The Starfish Project.

Fever Ray’s If I Had a Heart

Earlier
we reported on the solo debut work of Karin Dreijer Andersson (one half of The Knife). She is working under the name Fever Ray and some details have finally started to emerge on this project. The first single from the still to be named album has been released to iTunes. The track called “If I Had A Heart” is a slow burn and definitely in the same vein as something off Silent Shout. Fans of The Knife will not be disappointed with this release, which hits shelves on March 24th. The video which was recently shot by Andreas Nilsson should be released on January 6th (and from the still, the cover looks amazing).
