Obsession of the Week: Dark Night of the Soul

The Obsession of the Week is Dark Night of the Soul, which is the collaboration of Dangermouse and Sparklehorse with various other musicians. This audio visual project was to be released this summer, but legal issues between Dangermouse and his label have basically scrapped the project.

Fear not, however,  it will still be released as a book with images shot by David Lynch. The book will have a limited run of 5000 on May 29th. You can pre-order it here . The album has leaked
all over the internet and the book will come with a blank CD-R so that you can do with it what you will.

The album features a very talented line up of singers, including Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips), James Mercer (The Shins) and Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) to name a few. Check out a song from the album and the tracklisting below.

Davy Rothbart’s “Requiem for a Paper Bag”

Davy Rothbart is a cool guy from Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He went to a high school referred to as “Commie High,” and he’s the creator of the ingenious Found Magazine, “a showcase for all the strange, hilarious and heartbreaking things people’ve picked up”–things like poorly scrawled death threats, love letters, old pictures, etc. etc. You may have also read his short stories, seen him speak in your town, or heard him on This American Life.

Rothbart’s latest offering is Requiem for a Paper Bag. The anthology, which I’ve  heard is hilarious, includes 67 pieces  from celebrities like Chuck D., Devendra Banhart, Tom Robbins, Miranda July, Chuck Klosterman, Billy Bragg and others reflecting on found items.  Pass it around at a party.

Check out the Found website–it’s addictive.

Nieves is an independent publishing house in Switzerland that has just released Pigxote by Harmony Korine. The director of Mister Lonely, Julien- Donkey Boy and Gummo is one of the most polarizing forces in just about everything he touches from cinema and writing to photography.

This new book brings together 49 photographs from Korine’s private archive and features a series of photographs of young girl moving through different landscapes. There will be a Pixote exhibition at Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery from Jan 8th- Feb 26th.

The book can be ordered here at the Nieves store. Take a look around– there are a lot of goodies to be found in the online store. Take a look at some images from the book after the cut.

Read This: The Clash by The Clash

While I was out Christmas shopping, this book was in a lot of store fronts,  and it kept catching my eye.  I’ve been obsessed with The Clash I was 12, so I’ve seen it all when it comes to books about “the only band that matters,” but this one is a standout. First of all, it’s by the band themselves, and secondly, archived in this big pink baby are  some never before seen photos, posters and artwork along with some old favorites.   Plus, each member gives their side of The Clash story.

It’s a must have if you love  The Clash–buy it from an indie book store like Vromans.

Dreaming of Patti Smith, the Documentary

Put this on your life-or-death-must-see list for September. A new documentary about rock god/poet/artist/activist/genius Patti Smith premieres next month. The film, entitled Patti Smith: Dream of Life, was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and won the Cinematography award at Sundance.

The finished product is a result of 11 years of filming by director Steven Sebring, and I’ve heard it’s a poem of a documentary. Most excitingly, Smith narrates the film, which just finished a four-day preview at the Film Forum in New York. Luckies!

There’s also a companion book coming out, which I can’t wait to get my hot little hands on. Plus, you might want to pick up Patti Smith & Kevin Shields’ (of My Bloody Valentine) recently-released CD “The Coral Sea.”
