Nostalgia of the Week: Bratmobile/Heavens to Betsy 7″

split2
split

This Bratmobile/Heavens to Betsy 7″ came out in 1992 on K Records.  It was the first I’d ever heard of either band, and it included “Cool Schmool,”  sung by the hilarious Allison Wolfe, who scolds the scene for too much fashion emphasis and the inability to be “friends for real.”  Both Allison and Molly Neuman were fresh from a Nation of Ulysees tour when they wrote this, so I guess that makes sense.

The Heavens to Betsy track is “My Secret,” a  song presumably about sexual abuse, which was a common theme for the two-piece band that included Tracy Sawyer on drums and vocals by Corin Tucker who, of course, would later form Sleater Kinney. Sigh, she’ll always be Corin from Heavens to Betsy to me.

This 7″ inch was one of the first markers of the Riot Grrrl scene, and was at least partly responsible for making Olympia matter.  In fact, if you look closely at the back of the record, you can see that fans were asked to write to a Riot Grrrl p.o. box for more info.  I know I did.

Go back in time, and listen to Bratmobile’s track:

Obsession of the Week: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

The Obsession of the Week goes to the first single “Everything with You” and video from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. This has been making the blog rounds and for good reason–the song and video are truly beautiful and totally take me back to early 90’s Indie.

The video is directed by Art Boonparn and features the keyboardist from the group and her best friend palling around, playing guitar and doing random mundane stuff (but making it look alot of fun). The song is taken from there forthcoming debut album set for release on Slumberland Records in Feb 09. To tide you over you can purchase the 7 inch for “Everything with You” here.
