Japandroids

The Obsession of the Week is Japandroids, a garage rock band from Vancouver British Colombia. Hearing their song “Young Hearts Spark Fire” is like a jolt to the chest. There debut album Post Nothing has quickly become one of my favorite albums of the year. They are currently touring, and you can check out their tour dates after the cut.

Obsession of the Week: Castledoor

castledoor

It’s been 2 years since Castledoor arrived on the scene in Los Angeles. For some reason,  I have always missed seeing them live, so I finally caught them at their free Monday night residency at Spaceland. I have to say, oh boy have I been missing out on one of the best live bands Los Angeles has to offer.

The band seems poised for far bigger stages than Spaceland. They have just released their debut album Shouting at Mountains and have a few more shows left at their Spaceland residency, which should not be missed if you’re in the Los Angeles area.

Obsession of the Week: Dark Night of the Soul

DARK NIGHT POSTER FINALai

The Obsession of the Week is Dark Night of the Soul, which is the collaboration of Dangermouse and Sparklehorse with various other musicians. This audio visual project was to be released this summer, but legal issues between Dangermouse and his label have basically scrapped the project.

Fear not, however,  it will still be released as a book with images shot by David Lynch. The book will have a limited run of 5000 on May 29th. You can pre-order it here . The album has leaked
all over the internet and the book will come with a blank CD-R so that you can do with it what you will.

The album features a very talented line up of singers, including Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips), James Mercer (The Shins) and Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) to name a few. Check out a song from the album and the tracklisting below.

Obsession of the Week: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

edwarrd

A lot of times you hear the word buzz being thrown about to describe the next big thing, and most of the time it is not warranted. Well, in the case of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros , it certainly is. This 11-member band is led by Alex Ebert, formerly with IMA Robot. The band’s live shows have been garnering them quite a bit of attention, and they’ve already appeared on NPR and KCRW.

The band is in the middle of a residency at the newly-opened Regent Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. The band will release their digital EP “Up from Below” on May 19th and their debut album on July 14th. Check out a song below, but you must
check them out live.

Obsession of the Week: Jeremy Jay’s “Slow Dance”

jeremyjay2

The obsession of the week once again is Los Angeles singer/songwriter Jeremy Jay. Last year we were going crazy about Airwalker, and now he’s back with a new album called “Slow Dance,” which was released on March 24th on K Records.  He is currently touring the US and plays Los Angeles tonight at The Smell with another Threadtrend favorite Princeton.

Download a song off the new album below and check out the tour dates after the cut.

Obsession of the Week: The Whitest Boy Alive

whitestboy

The Obsession of the Week is The Whitest Boy Alive. I fell pretty hard for their last album Dreams, which was on constant repeat on my iPod. The Whitest Boy Alive is the Inde/Electro side project of Erland Oye (Kings of Convenience).

Their new album Rules is out on March 31st. It features chilled out dance music and will be on constant repeat just like the last one. So far, there are no US tour dates, but hopefully they will tour here in the summer. Download a song below.

Obsession of the Week: Dawes

dawes1
The obsession for the week is Dawes,  a Los Angeles-based 4 piece, who recently released there self-titled debut album on the label Record Collection. I’ve been a huge fan of this band for sometime, and word has definitely been spreading about their live shows, which have become packed with their growing following.

Download my favorite song by them below, and you can purchase the album on iTunes. They are heading to
SXSW next week, and then they will tour the US, opening for Jenny Lewis.

Check out the dates after the cut.
