Film Pick: Rudo y Cursi

rudo-y-cursi3

The film pick of the week is Rudo y Cursi, the directorial debut of Carlos Cuaron. The film brings back the acting duo of Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, who both had their breakthroughs in Y Tu Mama Tambien. The film centers around two brother living in a rural town in Mexico, and they both get a chance at soccer stardom when a scout comes looking for talent. Both brothers have their vices, which lead to huge consequences later on in the film.

Another notable thing about the film is the soundtrack, which features a number of acts such as Devendra Banhart, Juana Molina, Black Lips and Dios Malos covering regional Mexican songs. The soundtrack was released on May 5th. Check out the trailer below and a hilarious music video of Gael Garcia Bernal singing  “I Want You to Want Me” from the soundtrack.

Sneak Peek: HBO’s Grey Gardens

While I’m a little wary of Drew Barrymore doing an affected east coast accent, I have to admit I’m pretty excited for HBO’s new Grey Gardens movie.  If you’ve ever seen the original documentary (poster above) then you know how fascinating Edie Bouvier Beale, the eccentric hermit cousin of Jackie O, truly was.

This film mainly focuses on the life of Edie before the documentary that catapulted her and her mother to cult status.  Can’t wait.

It premieres Saturday, April 18.  See the trailer below.

The film pick of the week is Valentino: The Last Emperor. This is a documentary based upon the legendary Valentino Garavani head of the couture label. The film deals with his final couture show and his fifty year relationship with his business partner.

Like the poster suggests, it offers a glimpse at the man behind the curtain. The film made the festival rounds and is now playing in New York City. It will expand to Los Angeles and San Francisco this week.

Here’s the trailer:

Dakota Fanning is Cheri Currie?

cheriedakota

Strangely enough, Dakota Fanning is in negotiations to play Cheri Currie in the upcoming biopic about The RunawaysKristen Stewart has already attached herself  in the role of Joan Jett.  It’s a pretty interesting choice, but since  Currie was only 15 when she began fronting the teen punk group, it works age wise.  It might be a brilliant idea.

The movie is written and will be directed by music video director and photographer Floria Sigismondi. It starts shooting late spring.  And Joan Jett is the executive producer, so it’s legit.

I have only one question: who’s playing Lita Ford?

Film Spotlight: Europa

europa

The film pick of the week is the Criterion Collection‘s version of Lars Von Trier‘s Europa. In the U.S., it was released under the name Zentopa and is regarded as one of Von Triers’ crowning achievments. The film is shot in black and white and features color imagery that is highly stylized.  The story deals with an American pacifist who works as a sleep car conductor on Zentropa railways in Frankfurt in 1945. The film was not made with any digital effects, and all important elements of the film are shot in color (Steven Spielberg later used this style for Schindlers List), and it’s the final installment in Von Trier’s Europe trilogy. The Criterion Collection is loaded with tons of great features.

See the trailer below and a list of the features after the cut.
