Last night was the 25th MTV Video Music Awards, which were held on the Paramount lot. Once again, this year all eyes were on Britney Spears as she opened the show. Last year, she did that diasterous performance that had everyone talking, but this year, sadly, there was no performance, and we got stuck with an opening clip of her and Jonah Hill which was mildly amusing.

The show was hosted by Russel Brand, who had many people scratching their heads wondering who he was. In his defense, I thought he was pretty entertaining–he a few good lines including one about chastity rings and the Jonas Brothers that seems to be all the buzz (Jordan Sparks should eat a sandwich and shut it).

Rihanna was the first musical performing act (she performed twice) as she came out in a Beyond Thunderdome outfit and Thriller-esque dance moves, and you were kinda beggining for her to lip sync. Other performers included the Jonas Brothers, who had a herd of 16-year-old girls running through the Paramount backlot screaming at the top of there lungs.  I was seriously scared for them.

P!nk’s performance of “So What” was just plain scary as she looked like an angry lesbian blowing shit up. T.I. performed a medley of “You Can Have Whatever You Like” (T.I. can have this if he likes) and his new duet with Rihanna, which had yodeling in it–and to think I thought we all got our yodeling fix with Gwen.

Lil’ Wayne turned out a faguliscious performance as he brought the term “sagging low” to a new extreme.  I wonder why he had a red hankey in his back pocket and his pants down. I’m just sayin’.

Christina Aguilera performed a dance version of “Genie in a Bottle” that went into her new single, which is off of her Decade of Hits best of album coming out in Nov.  All I have to say about her performance was Kylie called and she says “‘sup”.

Kanye West closed the show with a new song that may be his first single from his new album (which may drop before the year is over), performing behind a giant screen and a glowing broken heart lapel.

As for the awards–yeah thats right there were awards handed out–Britney Spears won her first VMA.  She actually won all three that she was nominated for, including Video of the Year for Piece of Me, and to prove how out of touch MTV really is (did you need proof?) Tokio Hotel walked away with the Best New Artist award, winning over the likes of Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and she’s just being Miley.

Red Carpet pics of Lindsay, Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna and more after the cut.

the best part of the VMA’s was Kanye West’s performance at the end… the worst part was the host (what’s with the accent?)
