Last night’s free show at Spaceland featured none other than Devendra Banhart’s side project Megapuss, which he debuted at the Hammer Museum last month. The band also features Fab Moretti of The Strokes on drums. Word spread pretty quickly that the group was going to be playing as there was a pretty sizeable line before doors had even opened.
This time there was no penis skirt like Devendra wore the last time–instead the group was all decked out in Lakers and Bulls basketball jerseys. The band played a very loose set that didn’t stray to far from Devendra’s solo work, though this had a more playful mood with song titles such as “Chicken Tits.”
Funnyman Aziz Ansari came out and did one song with the group in his best Kanye West garb. Devendra played electric guitar throughout the show, trading off vocal duties. During the climax of their short set, Fab got a microphone and got girls to go onstage, and then proceeded to whip the crowd into a dancing frenzy by jumping down and dancing with them, while the group played on all smiles on stage. As the show ended everyone in the crowd had big grins on their faces, and everyone was cheering with much adoration.
