Paris vs. H&M: The Saga Continues

As much as people in the US go insane every time an H&M opens, not everyone is so welcoming. Case in point:Paris’ Mayor, who, last week, decided to fight the French Commission’s decision to let H&M worm its way onto Avenue Des Champs-Elysée.

This has been an ongoing fight, with the Mayor’s office claiming H&M would cheapen the street. The argument is that there are enough corporate logos, and they need to leave room for cafes and theaters to keep things civil. This is controversial reasoning though, since there are already equally gauche stores like Gap, Zara and the (barf) Disney Store hicking things up on the famous avenue.

I like a good H&M as much as the next cheapskate, but this resistance makes sense to me. America would do well to be as unslutty as the Parisians–we’ll put any store anywhere no matter who or what.

However, if I were them, I’d kick the Gap out and give the space to H&M.
