Style Icon: Dorothy Zbornak of the Golden Girls

Dorothy Zbornak, Threadtrend salutes you as our first ever Style Icon.!Your expertise in layering techniques and usage of draping have inspired closets across the country since the Golden Girls first debut in 1985. Well, there was a gap, probably between the years of 1995-2001. But in a great time of current fashion where showing ones figure is not the only way to feel sexy and hip, when wearing a long vest over a long jacket over a long shirt is not only edgy but comfortable as well, when moms and daughters alike can be found wearing the same flat scrunchy boots, your Women’s Study-Chic style beats out all the rest.

“Dorothy Patrillo Zbornak“, Played by the great Bea Arthur ,Who was  overly sarcastic and seemingly independent daughter of Sophia Patrillo, on  “The Golden Girls”,one of the greatest sitcoms ever produced. Dorthy’s character was Intelligent and the “glue” to the dysfunctional Miami household. This always showed in Dorothy’s wardrobe, which was equally intelligent. Dorothy could be found entering the living room or kitchen in a long knit top with signature geometric collar or neckline layered underneath a long flowing vest paired with a long skirt or harem-style pants and classic flat boots or low heels. The key was always in the detailing of the ensemble. The collar always stood up perfectly, there were always just enough buttons, her scarf was always draped to the tee, and jewelry was always understated but just right.

Dorothy has forever been a fashion inspiration to me. I’m 5’11” tall so seeing someone with her stature (5’10”) on television in clothing that appeared to have been tailor made for her gave me a spark of hope. At 25, I now take many cues from Dorothy’s stylist. I’ve put together the following ensemble in homage to Ms. Zbornak:

1. Plaid Belted CaftanBernhard Willhelm
2. Gathered halter vest- Haider Ackermann
3. ScarfUrban outfitters.com
4. Skirttopshop.com
5. Bootstopshop.com
6. Purseurban outfitters.com

This is just an example but there are so many great layering pieces out there to choose from! Check out www.totemfashion.com to view the collections of some AMAZING European designers, some of who’s work just screams Dorothy!

Please join me in this walk down Dorothy Zbornak lane…
